Cat TV

Sometimes the cats come up on the front walk or the back deck and stare into the house.

Leah usually thinks they want to come in, but sometimes all they want to do is take a shortcut from one side of the house to the other. They come in the front door and walk directly to the sliding glass door on the deck. Or the other way around. Other times when Leah opens the door they turn and run away. I think a lot of the time they’re doing the feline equivalent of couch surfing. They just like to stare into the house like humans stare at the TV.

I wonder if they find our lives as boring as we find most TV.

  1. Our two cats are strictly house cats (much to their disappointment, I’m sure). When coyotes moved in, all the feral cats on the property disappeared, so there’s no chance that our dears are going to go outside. However, one of the cats does a weird (to my mind) thing in the winter. We have a tiny unheated mud room between our back storm door and the inner door to the house. During the winter (and only during the winter), one of the house cats begs to be allowed to go into the mud room, whereupon she plops down on the concrete floor and just lays there for long periods of time before I hear her scratching to get back in. She could be laying on the bed duvet, but she chooses to lay on the cold concrete. Go figure.

  2. Robin — When the cats are staring through the front storm door, we are usually watching TV, so this must say something about both them and us.

Scott — They definitely do some weird stuff. I can usually figure out why a dog does what it does, but sometimes the cats’ motives elude me.
