Moon – roof

On Wednesday night the sky was clear enough for the first time in days to see the rising moon.

Leah called my lazy rear end out to get this shot. It’s only so-so. It was handheld, so it’s not really sharp enough to stand up to much enlargement. It was really pretty in person.

And the roof? That’s the new roof on our house.

The weather was pretty good for the last few weeks, but rain was expected during the early hours of Monday (October 26). The roofing material wasn’t delivered until late last week. Fortunately, the roofer came out Saturday with about an hour of daylight left and got the roofing felt up. Then he came and shingled all day Sunday, so by the time the rain started we had a roof. The framing contractor, who provided the roofer as well, said he doesn’t like to ask anyone to work on the weekend, but in this case he made an exception. We’re glad he did. At least the roofer got Monday and Tuesday off anyway, since it rained pretty much the entire two days.

Most of our siding material was delivered earlier last week, but there was still a little bit left. This came on Monday.

fishscales

This is the fish scale or half-round shingle material that will go on the porch gable. It will be painted white (as of now) to contrast with the dark green (as of now) color of the siding. I think siding will probably start today (Thursday Oct. 29) or Friday, assuming no more rain.

Sunset, January 26

It had been cloudy all day Monday, but around sunset the clouds started to break up. This shot was taken from Lavender Trail near our mailbox.

sunset2_26jan15I walked up the road just past the edge of our property, right around neighbor Jeff’s driveway and got this.

Sunset skies

As I have mentioned before, we don’t have a clear view of the west, so we have to look at what the sunset is doing to other parts of the sky. We saw this a few days ago.

This is looking down Wildlife Trail next to our driveway towards Rome.

We also saw this.

blue beam

I don’t know exactly what caused this since we couldn’t see the sky behind us, where the sun was setting, but I have to assume there were clouds that cast shadows across the sky and clouds that we could see. I’m going to make another assumption that the two shadows were caused by different clouds or different parts of the same cloud, since they appear to be different widths and shadowing different parts of the sky. It’s odd-looking, almost like a blue beam shooting across the sky. I have seen this phenomenon before, but never with a good view to the west to actually see what’s causing it.

Red sky at night

A few evenings ago Leah called me to the sliding glass door to look at the sky. Everything was red. Here is a view towards the west.

pink clouds

Here is the eastern view.

the east is pink

The tree in the left foreground is lit because I intentionally let my little point-and-shoot camera use its flash setting. If I turned the flash off, it gave the sky so much exposure that the color washed out. This is actually close to what it looked like to our eyes.

The setting sun was hidden behind the mountain. It must have been spectacular.

Sunrise, sunset

We had a nice sunrise this morning.

After sunrise it was mostly cloudy during the day. And then, just as the sun went down, it cleared up enough to get a decent shot of the sunset — only looking east instead of west.

Sunset looking away from the setting sun gives some nice pastels.

This is the best sunset photograph we have ever taken from our deck, mainly because the setting sun is hidden behind all the trees to the south and west. In the future, we’ll have to try looking away from the sun to see what we get.
